A trip to the Hocking Hills is not complete without a hiking adventure. Old Man’s Cave is the epitome of the beauty you will find in this area and a must do. You will explore waterfalls, cliffs, deep gorges, beautiful bridges, and caves. It is like walking into a storybook. This destination is a very popular place and we recommend getting an early start.
The Hocking Hills is one of the few areas left where you can admire the night sky without the interference of light pollution. John Glen Astronomy Park allows you to experience the wondrous sights of the night sky through their large telescope or you can set up your own. We love to bring blankets and just lay and look for shooting stars! Please check their website before visiting for updates on seasonal programs as programs are weather contingent. Parking passes are required during peak season and can be reserved on their site.
3. Muddy Boots
Muddy Boots is the best petting zoo we have experienced and it’s tucked away in our favorite region of Ohio. You will find a unique assortment of furry and feathery friends to pet and interact with. Our favorite is feeding Sadie the camel! We make an afternoon of our visit and pack a picnic lunch. Please check their hours before visiting as they change seasonally.
Nothing beats a lazy day on the river canoeing or kayaking. Pack a picnic and your Bluetooth speaker. There are several sandbars that are a great place to stop for a picnic lunch. We love to stop and take the short hike to explore the natural bridge at Rockbridge State Nature Preserve. This natural arch is spectacular to see! There are a few outfitters to choose from. Explore their sites and pick which one best meets your needs. Hocking Hills Adventures, Hocking Hills Canoe Livery, Adventure Pro Outdoors,
Butterfly Ridge is a Conservation Center that focuses on the butterflies, moths, and pollinators that are native to southeastern Ohio. There are guided tours or you can walk the trail on your own. The trail takes you through a beautiful forest and prairie. Our kid’s favorite part was the views from the top of the treehouse. We were surprised at how many butterflies we spotted in the treetops! Please refer to their website for hours and guided tour times.
Clear Creek Metro Park features over 5,300 acres of woodland interspersed with blackhand sandstone cliffs, ravines, and creeks. Our favorite is the Hemlock trail. This is considered a difficult hike, but if your family is active this trail should not pose too much of a challenge. Our kids love to end the hike with a splash in the creek. Don’t forget to pack your buckets and nets! If you enjoy fishing bring your gear, as there are many access points to the creek or Lake Ramona where you can partake in this activity. An Ohio fishing license is required.
We enjoy experiencing the beauty of the Hocking Hills from the back of a horse especially during the Autumn months. Uncle Buck’s Riding Stable offers a trail ride where the old town of Moonville used to be. You’ll actually ride through the alleged haunted Moonville Tunnel if you dare! There are other trails available as well.
Hocking Hills Frozen Yogurt Company offers both FROYO and hand dipped ice cream. You will also be delighted with their acai bowls, slushies, coffee, pop, and tea. Our teenager’s favorite offering is their Boba Lemonade!
For those who seek a more thrilling adventure consider ziplining, rappelling, or a high ropes course. Our family loves the feeling of flying through the trees on a zipline. We highly recommend experiencing this for yourself. There are few options in the area. Explore their sites and pick which one best meets your needs. Hocking Hills Canopy Tours and Ultimate Zipline Adventures.
